TJC Fall Update (September 22, 2009)
TJC is looking GREAT coming into our fourth week of the season! Our young rowers are working hard to build their base and are really shaping up to have some awesome racing this fall. Our new Novice are excited about the upcoming races and have really embraced the TJC culture of hard work and dedication. The first round of erg tests and time trials showed that most of the team worked hard to stay in shape over the summer and that sets us up really well for making great performance gains this year.
Congratulations to our NEW TJC CAPTAINS: The team voted on Team Captains about two weeks ago and have chosen the following athletes:
Ryan Hemelt
Sophie Heywood
Lane Kelly
McKenzie Redman
TJC Captains serve a vital role on the team. As peer leaders and role models they are held to a higher standard in the eyes of the coaches. At times they are called upon to serve as athlete representatives to the coaches. Additionally, the captains are required to plan and implement two team fundraisers per season. The proceeds from these fundraisers are earmarked for the TJC Scholarship Fund. I know all four of these athletes will do a fantastic job!
TJC Crews Selected for Prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta: The Head of the Charles Regatta is the largest rowing event in the world! Every year thousands of rowers from around the country and some of the best from around the world converge on Cambridge, MA to tackle the 5200 meter course that winds up river. This year's event will be no exception as there are over 8000 participants registered with an expected 400,000 spectators looking on from the banks of the Charles River. The course is laden with challenges and obstacles such as bridges and 90 degree turns. This year TJC will be represented by both a Women's and a Men's Youth Double Scull. Last year our entry in the WY2X placed 3rd! This year's crew of Sophie Heywood and Casey Redman will look to best that by going for a WIN! The two girls are coming off a very successful spring and summer season in which they earned a SILVER at the USRA Youth National Championships, missing the gold by a mere second, and the GOLD in the Women's B 2X at the USRA Club National Championships. Our men's crew of Alex Douglas and Zack Dale are poised for a great result as well. Zack Dale recently earned the SILVER at this year's USRA Club National Championships in the Men's B 1X. We wish them all "Good Luck"! For more information check out

TJC Selected to Host Prestigious Junior National Team High Performance Sculling Camps: For the third year in a row TJC has been chosen to host the US Junior National Team's Men's and Women's High Performance Sculling Camps. The women's camp will be held during the second week of January and the men's camp is being held the following week. Each camp is open to the TOP 20 male and female junior scullers from around the country. This year's women's camp will be coached by Guenter Buetter, the US Junior Women's National Team Sculling Selection Coach and TJC's own Daniel Duxbury, the US Junior Women's National Team Developmental Sculling Coach. The coaches for the men's camp are yet to be determined.
