TJC Fall Recap (December 18, 2009)

Tempe Junior Crew’s Fall 2009 season goes into the books as one of the best on record. Of course there are the very visible signs of our success as competitors, such as the many great race results our athletes had. Or how about our two seniors that both signed with their first choice colleges this fall. Holly Pysell, who has been rowing for less than a year, officially became a “Trojan” when she signed with the University of Southern California, while Jesse Burns joined the ranks of the "Lady Vols" when she received close to a full scholarship to the University of Tennessee.

Our young rowers shared their passion for the sport with a very special group of young people when the team volunteered with the Foundation For Blind Children and taught the group how to row on the ergometers.

Let’s not forget the impressive list of college coaches that joined us on the water this year to see our talented scullers in action. TJC was fortunate enough to be joined by:

Let’s not forget to mention the session by guest coach Kris Korzeniowski who is not only the Director of Rowing for the Men’s National Team, but also serves as the US Men’s National Team Sculling Coach! You can equate that to Brophy football getting coached by the New England Patriots’ own Bill Belichick.

Off the water, the purchase of two brand new, state-of-the-art shells and an erg-a-thon, whose revenues surpassed all predictions, show that the club’s Board of Directors and Boosters continue to selflessly devote their time and energy despite the current economical environment and all the added extra strains that brings to each of us.

TJC was also blessed with the addition of Ryan Krch to our coaching staff. His expertise and steady guidance helped our Novice squad get through a really fast-paced season. Additionally, TJC head Coach Daniel Duxbury was named to the roster of US Junior Women’s National Team Coaches for the fourth year in a row.

We often hear that rowing is the "ultimate team sport." In the case of Tempe Junior Crew, that extends through our entire organization. The fact is, that all of these great achievements and successes are only possible because everyone involved comes together for one purpose – to make TJC one of the best junior rowing programs in the country!

Thank you to all of the athletes for the countless hours of hard work and training as well as being the best possible ambassadors of our club. Thank you to the coaches for providing these talented athletes with strong guidance and leadership. Thanks to the Board of Directors and Boosters who bring their talents and energy to our club and help TJC ensure a solid foothold financially and logistically. Thank you to the parents of TJC who give your time, and support to your athletes and the club.

-Coach Dan

Head of the Hooch

TJC could not have asked for a better capstone regatta for our 2009 fall season than the Head of the Hooch in Chattanooga, TN. The weather was great, the course was fast and the racing was AWESOME! This year’s HOOCH was the biggest it has ever been with over 1200 boats racing on Saturday and over 700 racing on Sunday. This year it became the second largest headrace in America. Top crews from around the country converged on Chattanooga to take advantage of the southern hospitality and the fast conditions provided by the flowing Tennessee River. TJC entered a total of thirty boats in the regatta ranging from 1Xs up to 4Xs including novice and varsity, boys and girls. Almost the entire team attended, which made for a very fun and successful event.

There were a ton of great results at this regatta. One highlight was the 6th Place finish of our Men’s 4X made up of Briggs Hoyt, Ryan Hemelt, Chris Burghart and Carter Radcliffe. Their time of 15:05 put them within thirty-five seconds of the winning time. Casey Redmen and Sophie Heywood dealt out a little revenge with their first-place finish in the Women’s 2X.
The duo was able to edge out the crew from Detroit Boat who had won the head of the Charles a couple weeks earlier. The following day was a repeat for Heywood as she took the GOLD in the Women's 1X edging out a young lady who represented the US at World Championships last summer. Her 2Xs partner Casey Redman was hot on her trail, placing fourth overall.

Head of the Charles

Brophy Men's 4x
TJC fielded three crews for the 2009 Head of the Charles, the most ever for our club or from any club from Arizona. The men’s quadruple scull, racing as Brophy Crew, faced extreme conditions, even by Boston standards. As the crew of Briggs Hoyt, Ryan Hemelt, Chris Burghart and Carter Radcliffe came down the course they were pummeled by wet, heavy snow and enveloped in sharp, cold air. The event they raced in was an “Open” event, which pitted the boys against competitors with racing backgrounds that include World Championships and Olympiads. The crew pulled a respectable time of 20:09.52 considering all of the challenges that this course presents.
Men's 2x

Earlier that morning the conditions were a bit drier, but noticeably colder. The morning air, seemingly, had the ability to tear through any garments and directly bite your skin. The many turns and bridges that make the Head of the Charles notorious throughout the global rowing community challenged the men’s double scull of Lane Kelly and Alex Douglas. The boys finished 23rd with a time of 20:27.45.

The women’s double scull of Casey Redman and Sophie Heywood showed how important continuity is when it comes to the “Chuck”. Heywood was able to take the lessons from last year’s experience and apply it to her race is 2009. Most notably was the tight, perfectly executed turn coming into the last straightaway. The girls finished in fourth place, just shy of last year’s third place rowed by Heywood and her partner Megan Farrell. However, this years time of 20:44.09 was almost eleven seconds faster than the girls in 2008. The time put them 2.68% away from the winning time and earned TJC another guaranteed entry for 2010!

Hot Head Regatta

This year’s Hot Head Regatta served as a great tune-up regatta for our varsity rowers and was a terrific launching point for our many new novice rowers. The TJC coaches were paying much more attention to times than finish place though.

As the first regatta of the year, it’s used to evaluate the first several weeks of training and make any adjustments to the training calendar that may be needed.

Some of the highlights were wins in the women’s 2X, women’s 1X and men’s novice 2X as well as second place finishes for the Brophy crews in the men’s 2X and 4X. The women’s 2X of Sophie Heywood and Casey Redman as well as the men’s 4X of Briggs Hoyt, Ryan Hemelt, Chris Burghart and Carter Radcliffe showed good speed early in the year and we’re looking forward to what they can pull off in the spring.
